AUSTIN – Sunday afternoon left a lot to be desired, as the Austin Spurs were soundly defeated by the Iowa Energy, 102-89.
Bryn Forbes tallied 20 points and five rebounds to lead the silver and black. Cory Jefferson had 14 points and 12 rebounds to pick up his 15th double-double of the season. Patricio Garino stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Livio Jean-Charles finished with 10 points and four rebounds in 30 minutes.
Wade Baldwin’s 22 points led the way for the Energy. Baldwin also picked up four rebounds, three assists and three steals. JaKarr Sampson and Jarell Martin both scored 14 points, with Wes Washpun chipping in 13 points off the bench. Guard Wayne Selden added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench.
It took 21 seconds for the Energy to score as a layup by Martin gave Iowa a 2-0 lead.
Both teams traded baskets after that first minute, tying the game at 4-4. That would be the only time the Austin Spurs came close to leading, as Iowa maintained dominant control throughout the game en route to an easy 13-point win.
Even with a 62 percent shooting second quarter, Sampson’s 10 points in the period allowed the Energy to lead with ease throughout the first half.
After some time, the Spurs cut Iowa’s lead down to just one point with slightly over a minute remaining in the third quarter, but a Washpun jumper and a 3-pointer by Selden gave the Energy a 78-72 lead with just the fourth quarter left to be played.
Austin’s paltry fourth quarter offense allowed the Energy to stay ahead throughout the remainder of the game.
Three more games remain in the Austin Spurs homestand. They’ll be back in action on Friday, Mar. 3 at 7:30 p.m. against the Long Island Nets (14-24). The game will stream on Facebook Live.
