The San Antonio Spurs officially announced Monday that they signed summer league standout Matt Costello to a two-way contract.

Costello made a name for himself in Las Vegas, averaging 11.3 points and 12.0 rebounds in four games with the Minnesota Timberwolves summer league squad. His 12 rebounds per game led all players in the summer session.

Previously, Costello went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft just like current San Antonio Spurs guard and former Michigan State teammate Bryn Forbes.

In four years with the Spartans, Costello averaged 10.7 points and 8.2 rebounds en route to also becoming the school’s all-time leader in blocks with 146.

Most recently, Costello spent time with the Iowa Energy of the G-League, where he averaged 9.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 blocks in just over 23 minutes per game.

As a two-way contract player, Costello will spend a majority of his time with the Austin Spurs, but can spend up to 45 days in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs.

Any time he spends in San Antonio before the G-League season begins or after the G-League playoffs will not count towards his 45 days in the NBA.

Additionally, Costello will occupy one of San Antonio’s two available two-way contracts which allows the Spurs to retain up to 17 players on the roster at once. Two-way contracts don’t count against the salary cap, and the deadline to sign players to a two-way deal is January 15.
